Centenary of Portswood Library – events organized by the Friends of Portswood Library

October 22, 2015 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Friends of Portswood Library was formed a year ago to promote the continued use of the library, particularly in view of the Council’s proposals to close some of the libraries in Southampton in the future. Anyone can join, and the Membership Form is held by the library staff in Portswood Library. No fee is charged, although donations are very welcome.  We meet every 2 months in the library on a Monday at 5.30pm. See Events calendar for details
The Centenary of Portswood library is being celebrated on Thursday 22 October from 11am – 4pm. There will be an official opening, hopefully by the Lord Mayor and many interesting events are being planned. A local children’s author will be giving a talk as well a local historian, plus displays by Clubs who use the library – Knit Wits and a Reading Group.   An IT tutor will be on hand to give one to one guidance to introduce members of the public to computers.  There will be competitions, local schools are being involved and refreshments of course will be served.
More things are planned –  please see below and also consult this Events page for an update!

Portswood Library Centenary – Thursday 22 October 2015

Share your stories about the library

Celebrate 100 years of Portswood Library. There will be an exciting programme of activities and events for children and adults, with special guests, stories, crafts and lots more to be announced.

To help with the celebrations there will be a display featuring the memories and stories of library users. For that to happen they need your help.

Do you have an amusing story/anecdote about the library you would like to share with us? Or did you achieve something special or discover a new skill with the help of the library? It can be anything. Whatever it is they would love to hear from you!

Centenary Writing Competition

As part of the celebrations why not enter the writing competition? Your piece of writing should begin with the words “What my library means to me….” and be no longer than 200 words. If you have a story/anecdote why not use that, or maybe you just want to say why the library is important to you. Tell them what the library means to you and be in with a chance of winning some fabulous prizes. Prize winners will be announced on 22 October.

Send your reminiscences and competition entries to portswood.centenary@southampton.gov.uk  or hand them to staff at Portswood library, Portswood Road, SO17 2NG
